For all Troop 435 Scouts interested in working on their citizenship in the community merit badge…
I have arranged for our Scouts to meet with School Board member David Banks this Saturday morning. Mr. Banks is our elected School Board member for Post 5, which covers Lassiter, Pope, and Sprayberry High Schools and Daniell, Hightower Trail, Mabry and Simpson Middle schools . (http://www.cobbk12.org/board/)
Mr. Banks will meet with myself and any interested Scouts on Saturday morning at 8:45 AM at the Johnson’s Ferry Baptist Church on Johnson’s Ferry Road , just North of Lower Roswell Road. You can enter the church parking lot from Woodlawn Road to get to the church Activity Center at the back of the church. We will meet in the atrium of the church Activity Center at 8:45 AM this Saturday, April 7. Please let me know if you plan to attend so we can arrange the proper size room for this event.
Mr. Banks began his first term on the Board January 2009. Mr. Banks was born in Atlanta and has lived in East Cobb since 1969. Mr. Banks enjoys growing vegetables, building RC airplanes and taking cruises with friends. Mr. Banks' objective as a Board member is to move the Cobb County School System to a first-class 21st century organization where the best and latest technology tools are effectively used to enhance student achievement, to be aware of employees needs, and fulfill the community expectations.
To fulfill a portion of your Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge requirements, prepare by determining what issues are important to you or others in your community in regards to your school or the school system in general and prepare your questions for Mr. Banks.
4. Choose an issue that is important to the citizens of your community,
then do the following:
(a) Find out which branch of local government is responsible for this issue.
(b) With your counselor’s and a parent’s approval, interview one person from the branch of government you identified in requirement 4a.
Ask what is being done about this issue
and how young people can help.
(c) Share what you have learned with your counselor.
If you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to ask!
Thanks!
Lee
