Backpacking Trip August 27-28

In two weeks the troop will be setting out for their backpacking trip at the end of this month. For new Scouts that have never hiked before, be sure to bring a backpack, food (such as freeze-dried meals that just need boiling water), a good Nalgene, durable hiking shoes, good raingear, a sleeping bag, and a tent (or buddy that’s bring the tent). Also bring $10 for gas plus a few dollars ($5) for a quick stop at a convenient store on the way back ie for a cold drink etc..

Meet at the church at 8:00AM having already eaten breakfast. We will then load up and head to the Springer Mountain parking lot on FS 42 in north Georgia. After mounting our backpacks, we’ll head up Springer Mountain for 1 mile to the Southern Terminus of the AT. Once we get our fill of the Cartecay Valley, we’ll head north on the Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) for 4 miles to 3-Forks where we’ll make camp. There is an option to hike to Long Creek Falls from 3-Forks if enough Scouts wish to do so. Next morning we break camp and head south on the AT back to the Springer Mountain parking lot.

You will need lunch for Saturday, dinner for Saturday night, breakfast for Sunday, and enough snacks to get you home on Sunday. We will be stopping at the convenience store on GA-52 and Roy Road on the way home. We recommend Mountain House type meals for dinner. Oatmeal works well for breakfast or breakfast bars. Lunches are best handled with snacks like crackers and peanuts (GORP).

Backpacking Demo August 22

During the next meeting at 7:40, Mr. Matas is giving a backpacking demonstration for all the parents of the younger Scouts going on this trip.

The Troop’s calendar can be reached via the link:

Court of Honor – December 05, 2011

Popcorn Information
Our Popcorn Kernel, Kimberly B., handed out the popcorn sales packets at the August Court of Honor. Orders are due (along with the money collected) on October 17. Popcorn orders will be available to pick up at the November 7 meeting. This is a good opportunity to support scouting. Approximately 25% of the sales will be placed into the scout's escrow account to be used for scouting expenses.

Irfan’s Eagle Board of Review August 18
After many years of being with the BSA, earning his merit badges, and completing an Eagle Project only a month ago, Irfan Khan, now turned 18, is finally able to reach his Eagle BOR and be just one step away from achieving his Eagle Scout rank before departing for college. We congratulate Irfan for all the effort he put in to making it this far and wish him the best of luck in his upcoming BOR.

Advancement

Please check inside all Scout handbooks that your name is in the front and that the book you have is your own. We do have a scout who is missing his handbook.

Life Scouts

Life Rank Scouts will have a weekly opportunity at our Monday night meetings to review and plan for Eagle Rank. Scouts should contact the appropriate merit badge counselor before beginning an Eagle required merit badge or in order to continue one started at summer camp or a merit badge clinic. Merit badge counselors will be listed on our troop website. It would be helpful to bring blue cards and workbooks for partially complete merit badges to meetings.
Here are some good links for assisting Life Scouts to Eagle Rank:

Any Scout needing a leadership position can talk to Jay (SPL) or Mr. Khan.

Remember to be signed off an Assistant Scout Master, request a Scout Master Conference, then a Board of Review after you have completed your rank requirements.
