Rainy squishy update from Camp Skymont!

Hi all!

As I'm sure you all know, the weather turned wet wet wet last night.
But of course, when we had roll call at the flag ceremony this
morning, our troop call was "It's a great day for Scouting!"

(Response was, oddly enough, somewhat lukewarm.)

The weather did hold off long enough for our camp cookout last night -
Wednesday nights are the camp staff's off night, so we were supplied
monster portions of carrots, onions, potatoes, and hamburger patties
for silver turtles. Lots of the boys got some good cooking experience
helping slice the vegetables and clean up the prep area - so don't let
them get out of kitchen duties at home, they know very well how to do
it!

Mr. Deakins also supervised three delicious dutch oven cobblers for
dessert - peach, apple, and cherry. We all stuffed ourselves silly and
went to bed well-fed.

Today is the last day of merit badge classes for the boys. Tonight,
the Hawks have their Polaris campout on a field next to one of the
activity areas - to meet second and first class requirements, they
will present themselves in uniform and pitch and sleep in their own
tents. Tomorrow morning they'll break camp and return to our campsite
in time to join us for breakfast.

Friday is a make-up and finish-up day for merit badge classes - lots
of classes have homework and/or essays as part of the requirements,
and Friday is a good day for wrapping that up (especially if the
weather continues!). The Hawks will go on a five-mile hike between
breakfast and lunch - Skymont sits on the edge of mountain, which has
a very flat top but drops off about 1000 feet in a mile or so, making
for some great overlooks.

The chance of rain drops off somewhat tonight and tomorrow morning, so
think dry thoughts for us!
Cheers,
John

Update from Camp Skymont

Hello from Camp Skymont!

We are a little damp, but are having a great time. Mrs. Bishop and Mr.
Zenoble can be very proud of their Hawks, who are really enjoying
their first year of camp. I've sat in on some of their Polaris
sessions, and they're all involved and interested. They're excited
about the skills they're learning, from swimming rescue to knots to
cooking (they made biscuit gravy yesterday, but couldn't finish their
biscuits). ("Finish Their Biscuits would be a good name for a rock
band.)

The older boys are enjoying all their merit badge classes. Mr. Deakins
helped out in yesterday's Engineering class, talking to them about
what "real" engineers do (which he says can be summed up as
"mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets").
The camp is laid out nicely, with our campsite being about as central
as it can be, and short walks to pretty much every activity area
except shooting sports. Even that isn't too bad, and it sure is
flatter than Woodruff!

Believe it or not, we have FLUSH TOILETS in our campsite - sheer
luxury! Scouts and leaders both are quite appreciative, I can tell
you!

Mr. Deakins has been taking pictures. If I can figure out how to get
his camera to talk to this computer, I'll upload some pictures. It's
pretty archaic, though - I think instead of USB it has USWas.

Think dry thoughts for us, and I'll send out another update soon!

Cheers,
John "Commander" Cooper
