Scout University

Attention all scouts - it's that time of year again when you can earn some Merit Badges without going to summer camp.  I will be coordinating the Merit Badge University
Registration is now open - what I need for you to do is review the available classes and either sign up for one or send me an email on the class you want.

If you want to sign up or it and pay online yourself, you will need to register as a user.  Things to remember - we are in the Atlanta Area District, Foothills Council and Troop 435.  If you don't want to register yourself just go to the hyperlink below, see what class is available and send me an email an I will sign your son up -  you can bring me the $13 at the next scout meeting.  Once you sign up its non-refundable.

Attention parents - I'll need some volunteers that would be willing to drive to the event.  Last year between some of our leaders that are teaching the classes and volunteer parents we had about 7 cars which was just enough.  You can sit in on the classes or roam the university - I found the Crime Prevention class last year taught by a GBI officer to be pretty interesting...

the link to the Merit Bade site is:  www.meritbadge.info  This is the one at KSU - details are below:

Camp and Cook recap - April 6 and 7, 2013

Good evening Troop 435!  Sorry for the delayed delivery, but I went straight from Camp and Cook to my Spring Break Vacation!

Kudos and recognition are well deserved for a weekend of significant accomplishments by Troop 435.  The entire Camp and Cook event last weekend went beautifully!  The coordination, cooperation, and effort…between the Scouts, the adult leaders, and the Church…Outstanding!  Fantastic job everyone!  Thank you!  The weekend was gorgeous and the Scouts made a great impression upon the Church and its membership with their camping skills, cooking skills, great work ethic and cheerful attitudes!

We were blessed with perfect weather the whole weekend.  The following is a list of our accomplishments on Saturday:

           Set up Camp
Cleared out the barbecue pit area, tearing apart the pit, saving reusable items and clearing the rest of the debris.
Had Marco’s Pizza for lunch – and Marcos Padmanabhan insisted he did not make the pizza even though his name was all over it…
Cleaned up the front yard of the church from leftover construction debris from the playground redevelopment project done by the church.
Played Games and relaxed in the warm sunshine
Enjoyed delicious fresh grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for dinner, prepared by Jenn Crea and a group of Scout volunteers and cooked by grillmaster Tim Lyles.
Topped off with tasty frozen desserts (a true rarity on any campout!) provided by the Crea’s.
           More fun and games.
Early bedtime to recharge the batteries for the early Sunday wake up call

The adult overnighters made sure everyone got to bed at a reasonable hour and maintained a small campfire until they too had to get some sleep.

Markay, the breakfast cooking coordinator, arrived at the crack of dawn Sunday and started gathering her troops of adults and scout cooking patrols. Our brave adult leaders, Maria, Melodie, Alex, Jennifer and Darren, headed up the various cooking stations.  The Scout cooking patrol was comprised of Soorian, Sean, Joseph, Marcos and our two attending Hawks, Chris and Brandon.  The cooking patrols were up before dawn, getting out of their comfy beds, getting into their Class A’s to head to the kitchen where MarKay orchestrated their movements into a symphony of cooking magic!  We would like to give special recognition to Joseph for being an outstanding contributor, seeking and taking on extra responsibility and independently finding ways to help.

Building on last year’s performance, MarKay led the cooking patrol to the perfect delivery of a wonderful breakfast in the theme of the Boy Scouts fleur-de-lis.  Thank you, Markay, for volunteering and buying all of the cooking supplies, preparing everything the night before, then coordinating the big day!

Together we prepared and served breakfast for about 40 church members and 35 Troop 435 participants. We had 3 Scout Patrols rotating cooking, serving and cleaning assignments, and all did their jobs quite impressively.  What a great job Scouts!

The Men’s Club and the congregation loudly applauded the cooking patrol for their fine job, the Troop for their hard work, and in a very humbling gesture, made a contribution of $500 to Troop 435. We are very proud and thankful to those that participated and represented us so well!!  Thank you!

After breakfast, we filled two whole rows in the church service with our Scouts and their parents.  It was a very fulfilling service, and the Troop was mentioned with very high praise.

Finally, after all was done, the Troop packed up, cleaned up and bugged out in a quick and orderly manner. What a satisfying accomplishment!

Thanks again to all participating Scouts, Adult Leaders, and our Sponsor, the East Cobb United Methodist Church, for making this a very successful event for Troop 435!

2013 Camp and Cook Coordinator

P.S.  If I left some very important participants and/or activities off this summary, it is only because there was simply too many great things going on, so many major contributors to the success of the weekend, that it was just impossible to remember all of the great things that went into this event.

Adopt a Mile/Court of Honor

Adopt a Mile  is Saturday (March 30) at 9AM.  If your scout is not on the backpacking trip, please join us.  We meet at Chase Bank (Publix shopping center on E. Piedmont across from the YMCA).  We need several adults to help monitor the scouts as we typically split into 2 groups to cover our section of East Piedmont from Roswell Road to Allgood.  Time commitment is 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  This counts toward service hours...and you never can tell what treasures you may find.

Court of Honor:  Monday's Court of Honor is at the Fellowship Hall.  We will recognize all rank advancements and merit badges earned since our December Court of Honor.  We will also incorporate Omar's Eagle Court of Honor.  Hawks and 2nd year scouts (Ent) should arrive at 7PM to help set-up.  If your scout has been asked to participate in the flag ceremony or Omar's Court of Honor, they may have been asked to arrive at 7PM for practice. The older scouts will handle clean-up.  The celebration will begin at 7:30PM.  Scouts should be in full field uniform wearing their merit badge sash if they have one.  Mothers are reminded to wear their mother's ribbons.  This is a family event.  Refreshments will be served.  The Fellowship Hall is at the opposite corner of ECUMC where we meet.  Continue driving past the sanctuary, turn right, and the Fellowship Hall is the last door on the right.

Camp Cards—Leslie H. will have camp cards at the Court of Honor.  She will also accept camp cards that you are planning to return.  This fundraiser will end during Cobb County Spring Break.

Fundraising Garage Sale - April 20 and 21st

We have firmed up the dates for our Garage Sale fundraiser. The dates will be April 20 and 21, and you can bring stuff by Friday April 19th.

This has been a big money earner for us in the past, serving lots of great purposes...not the least of which is helping us clear out our attics, closets and garages and raising funds for new equipment and other key needs. Believe it or not, we have raised as much as $1,000 in one weekend doing this sale. We have great signs that reel people in from all over and we make it easy for people to buy everything they see.

We ask that you start setting aside sell-able goods that you want to get rid of and reserve them for the garage sale. With "stuff" from about 40 families, it adds up quick and creates a lot of excitement.

The sale will be at the Lee's residence, which is not far from the Church.

There will be more information as we get closer to the date. If you have any questions in the mean time, please do not hesitate to contact Lee B.

As a reminder, you can see a calendar of scheduled activities on the Troop website at http://www.troop435.org/

Lee

Troop 435 Calendar and Website

Good evening all!

In an effort to improve communication about troop activities, I would like to remind you, or point out to you that we have a website that is occasionally maintained with useful information.  If you would like to be a contributor to the website, we always welcome volunteers to contribute their talents....

Also, on that same website, on the right is a Goggle Calendar, where we do our best to make calendar entries for upcoming events.

Bookmark these sites!  Check them out!  Note your favorite trips on the calendar and make sure your scout and/or you are signed up to participate!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks!

Lee

P.S.  We should have some exciting news soon about upcoming planned events and trips.  You will eventually get the details via e-mail, but may preview some of them on the calendar right now....

Zenobles Farm campout and activities

Our next troop camping trip is to Zenoble’s Farm near Macon.  Departure is scheduled for Friday, February 15th at 7:00 PM unless otherwise announced, and return is scheduled for Sunday around 1.  The trip is scheduled for the weekend of the 15th, but if the chance of rain is high, it will be moved to the following week-end.

The general plan for activities is Shooting led by Simon Bailey; Fishing Merit Badge, led by Scott Grant and Scout Skills led by other parent volunteers.

The scouts will be split into two groups and we will have a Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon safety training and shooting session.  Mr. Bailey is an NRA certified Rifle & Shotgun instructor, is a certified NRA Range Safety officer, a BSA Rifle and Shotgun Merit badge councilor, serves as the Range Officer and Match Director for the NRA Light Rifle program and as an Assistant Range Officer for the Youth Shooting program at River Bend Gun Club.   As with all activities involving firearms, safety is our first priority.

The other part of Saturday will be spent on fishing, advancements and cooking.

This Monday the scouts will be producing menus to be approved by leadership so that cooking is a bigger part of the experience than on recent trips.  Please take this opportunity to confirm that your son is or is not signed up for the trip and whether they plan to go.  Also, this is a great trip for the adults as well, and all parents are invited to be a part, so please let me know if you plan to go so we can determine how many adult drivers and riders we can expect.

The scouts need to bring $25.00 to the next Monday meeting and give to Mr. Bailey at to cover shooting and transportation and $10 to the food patrol leader for food expenses. The cost of food for the adults will be determined later and will be payable during the trip.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

YIS,

Lee
